SINCERELY, ADDISON'S SISTER
"So, he's in the bathroom, and he's sort of like, half way in the tub, but then sort of like, halfway out," he apathetically explained. I was terrified. Trembling, heart pounding, knees quaking, terrified.

"Could you check and see if Addison is DEAD? Does he have a pulse?" I don't know why I was still surprised that his roommate didn't bother to check to see if my brother was alive.

He simply stated, "Nah man, he's okay. He does this, like, all the time. He's just asleep. He'll just sleep really good for a while, and then he'll wake up and he'll be fine. It's cool."

But it wasn't fine. My brother wasn't FINE.

For a time, prescription drug addiction and overdoses were not openly discussed, but after what happened to my brother, I started talking. And I have a big mouth. Sincerely Addison's Sister is my God-led journey through tragedy to bittersweet triumph as I set out to prove that one unknown person can make a difference for thousands of families.

EVERYBODY KNOWS SOMEBODY...
My baby brother, Addison, passed away in 2012 at the age of 22 from an accidental overdose to prescription pills. His death was at the height of the opioid epidemic before my family even realized there was an epidemic in our state.

When I am not in the kitchen, I spend much of my time sharing our story to local high school, middle schools, churches, and recovery houses.
Throughout my journey of loving and losing an addict, my legislative success in the aftermath, and the groups that I still continue to speak to ten years later, I have learned that EVERYBODY KNOWS SOMEBODY.
Each one of those "somebodies" has value. They have meaning, and I will forever be an advocate for the addicted.
